In his latest edition, John Bock presents a fragmented figure, half human, half creature. The etching on hand-woven paper bears hastily sketched words such as QUASI-ICH, EVIL, and MODDER.
Across the body and into the foreground spreads a network of objects and materials—at once functional and utterly nonsensical. It remains unclear whether these objects are merely being used or have already merged with the being itself.
The etching may be read as a (self-)portrait, though not in any traditional sense. The figure resists clear definition, and language offers no anchor here. The boundary between body and object is blurred.
Like a dadaist stage—and in keeping with Bock’s practice—the work defies all logic. Yet something about it feels familiar. Here, as in life, paradox becomes structure.
