Collection: Werner Büttner

* 1954 in Jena, Germany
He lives and works in Geesthacht, Hamburg, Germany

Surrounded by artists like Martin Kippenberger, Albert Oehlen and Markus Oelhen, Werner Büttner transformed the postwar art scene in Germany, focusing on painting. Not everyone was thrilled by the appearance of the enfant terrible, as they refused to support Minimalism or Conceptual Art and rather propagated the return to painting. Hence, the group was later being dubbed Junge Wilde, while following a neo-expressionist, neo-dadaist, humorous but sarcastic approach.
Büttner is professor for painting at HFBK Hamburg. His work is held by several collections, such as Sammlung Falckenberg in Hamburg, Hamburger Kunsthalle, Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie in Karlsruhe and FRAC in Limoges and Angoulême.
