Collection: Hanne Darboven
* 1941 in Munich, Germany
† 2009 in Hamburg, Germany
Hanne Darboven defined the whole of her artistic endeavor as “writing.” From the beginning of her career onward, she explored numerous manifestations of written composition and print: self-published multiples, postcards, LPs and later CDs, manuscripts, and ever-growing collections of loose papers fill exhibition walls as framed pieces and meters of shelving as sorted files. As one of the few female names in Minimalist Art, Darboven lived in New York in the 1960’s, before returning to her family home in Hamburg. Her work is deeply connected with Klosterfelde Edition, as Helga Maria Klosterfelde produced her first edition with her in 1990, the gallery’s beginnings. Darboven’s work is held by several international collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, Dia:Beacon in New York, Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, and the SMAC in Gent, amongst many others.
