"Before I got on stage to tell jokes in front of three men I had paid to look bored, I hadn't considered gender much. I grew up sexist. I admired only male artists, and used the label "woman art" as a pejorative. I laughed at the idea of gender studies. I put my hand up in a seminar at university to ask if the progressive language in a particular text we were given to read was "literally a joke". I was desperate not to be considered a female artist, hated it when one was mentioned to me as a reference and avoided anything that could tar me with that dismissive lady brush.
